History of the Mission: Our Lady of Victory Church, 1978 (?), Porter Creek. This was a new parish started by Fr. Francis Triggs, OMI. This community’s first church was a small barrack building from the Takhini Military Camp. The present building is used for multipurposes. The sanctuary is able to be closed off with large accordion doors. This frees the public area of the congregation to be used as necessary. On one side of this building, is a public kitchen that serves up the foods for the gatherings. The building is constructed of tan coloured bricks that were obtained for a very small price from a company that had brought in too many bricks for another project. Parishioner, Larry Wheelan, was in charge of the church construction. He was assisted by many volunteers from the parish. Many of the altar furnishings came from the Takhini Military Chapel when the military left town. The rectory is a modular home with a full basement. During Fr. Alex Monnet’s time as pastor, he was also the Oblate Provincial of the Yukon Province. Consequently, this was the Oblate Provincial House. In 1992, Fr. Dave Daws, with permission from Bishop Tom Lobsinger, exchanged pulpits for one year with 2 priests from Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Other priests who have served here are Frs. Jean-Paul Tanguay, OMI, Joseph Haley, Patrick Mee, OMI from Ireland, Bishop Lobsinger, OMI, Gerard Patry, (?), and Robert Kelly, OMI. Another resident that lived here for 9 years was Bro. Cyprien Soucy, OMI. It was his responsibility to keep the wood fires going in the church, to keep the grass cut, to plant trees and flowers and to keep the parking lot plowed of snow during the winter. As a hobby he raised rabbits which sometimes ended up in a soup or casserole.
